Saginaw Accident Guide Free consultation

Do You Need a Lawyer After a Saginaw Car Accident?

Short answer: Not always. If you weren't hurt, you can often handle the car claim yourself. If you were injured and the other driver caused it, a lawyer takes the insurer off your hands, typically for no fee unless you recover money. A consultation is free.

What you get

Someone to gather the report, records and evidence, handle every adjuster call, set up a letter of protection if you need care, negotiate down medical bills and liens, and decide what to demand, or sue if needed.

Five claims about lawyers, checked

Short answer: The "you'll get less" figures come from the Insurance Research Council, which is tied to the insurance industry and uses insurers' own files. Its studies compare serious, disputed cases with minor ones.

  1. "You'll net less." The IRC's 2018 closed-claim study reported $1.17 per dollar of economic loss for people without lawyers and $0.78 net for represented claimants, with a median 375 days to final payment for represented claims (IRC 2018). That's a ratio. Bigger cases can have a lower ratio and still pay more in total.
  2. "The cases are the same." In the IRC's own 2004 survey, represented claimants' medical expenses were almost 400% higher (IRC 2004).
  3. "Settlements aren't bigger." The IRC's 1999 survey found represented claimants' gross settlements were higher (IRC 1999). University researchers tied attorney involvement to a 64% higher average claim (Browne & Puelz, 1996) and found a very strong attorney–claim value link in UM/UIM claims (Browne & Pryor, 2004).
  4. "The source is independent." The IRC is affiliated with The Institutes, and its president is the Insurance Information Institute's chief insurance officer (IRC 2025).
  5. "Insurers don't care if you hire a lawyer." Rutgers professor Jay Feinman documents claim systems designed so "claimants would be deterred from hiring lawyers" (Delay, Deny, Defend).

To be fair to the other side: the IRC's 2026 summary reports $1.40 with attorneys vs. $1.80 without per dollar of medical expense, with fees estimated at one-third (IRC), and a regulators' exam of Allstate's Colossus software found no "systemic underpayment" (summary). No study predicts any one person's result.
